BHARTI KHER

Akara Contemporary

The UK born, Bharti Kher’s works are striking examples of art that is complex and embedded with layers of symbolism. Her most popular central motif of practice is the ready-made ‘bindi’. These bindis, which are decorative dots worn on the centre of the forehead by Indian women, lend her art a range of meaning and subtext across historical and contemporary periods.  Even when the trajectory of her art includes other mediums, the use of bindis has become second nature to her. Kher also creates sculptures and collages of hybrid creatures that act as arch ends to how she sees the relevance of the ‘body’. Her thought process with the body and how it mirrors her concerns is not specifically autobiographical but tries to reveal how time passes through us. Living through life, our bodies become a storehouse of memories, actions, and dreams. Each having its own meaning ready to be incorporated onto the surface. Bharti Kher lives and works in Delhi.
