MOHAN SAMANT

Akara Modern

1924 -2004

Mohan Samant was a pioneering figure in Indian modernist painting and a member of the influential Progressive Artists’ Group (PAG). Described by Ranjit Hoskote as a "one-man avant-garde," Samant developed a unique, ever-evolving style that defied categorization. A truly transcultural artist, he drew inspiration from a wide range of visual traditions — from the intricate carvings of Hindu temples and the symbolism of Egyptian hieroglyphs to the forms of pre-Columbian ceramics. He blended these with the influence of European modernists like Paul Klee and Pablo Picasso, forging a distinctive visual language that reflected his global sensibilities.
His art is both richly layered and playfully experimental, combining painting, drawing, and low-relief constructions in a way that reflects his deeply dynamic vision. Through this hybrid approach, Samant created a diverse body of work that continues to resonate across time and geography.
