Ram Kumar is an artist of great sensitivity. Born in Simla, Ram Kumar studied in Delhi and later left for Paris and studied painting under Andre Lhote and Fernand Leger. There is a transcendental lyric in all his landscape paintings. Kumar's early paintings were figurative. He portrayed the urban middle class man incarcerated in the confines of his urban environment. In the early 1960’s Ram Kumar took to abstract painting after a pivotal journey to Banaras and never returned to figural painting since then. Through a slow process Kumar subsequently made a transition from figurative to abstract art. He passed away in 2018,, in New Delhi.
