G RAVINDER REDDY
Akara Contemporary
1956
Born in 1956 in Andhra Pradesh, Ravinder Reddy completed
his B.F.A. & M.F.A. in Sculpture from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja
Sayajirao University of Baroda (1975-82). He then received a diploma in
sculpture from Goldsmith College of Art in 1983 and pursued a ceramic course at
the Royal College of Art, London in 1984.
Women have always been the focus of Reddy’s work. All his
work is a celebration of the female form, encapsulated by his eye for detail as
well as his respect for the feminine – whether depicted as giant heads or
figurative, voluptuous sculptures. His palette features gold, red, yellow and
blue. The gaze of Reddy’s women is always arresting, looking straight, bold,
uninhibited. Reddy states that he always wanted the eyes to make the viewer
feel a little dwarfed by their sheer penetration. His works are inspired from
the Gupta, Maurya, Amravathi and Chola dynasties, West African murals and the
Yakshi-like forms of the Kushan and Mathura styles. Ravinder Reddy is always
concerned with forms that are universally understood.
Ravinder Reddy has exhibited his work worldwide, including
Grosvenor Vadehra, London; the Bose Pacia Gallery, New York; Le Jardin
d’Acclimation, Paris; the Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, USA; and the Sackler
Gallery, Washington D.C. His works are a part of collections such as that of
the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan; the
Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, USA; and the Queensland Art Gallery,
Brisbane, Australia among others.
