Pai was
born in Goa and studied at the Sir J. J. School of Arts in Mumbai, after which
he went to Paris to complete his education. Having spent his early years in
British India, he played an active part in the struggle for freedom. These
formative years shaped his attitude toward life and work, leading to a highly
individualistic and innovative style.
From 1947
to 1950, Pai was largely inspired by Goan subjects and the concept of Indian
miniatures. His initial works reflected the Goan way of life. Pai was also
inspired by ancient Egyptian sculptures. Owing to his love for music, his
paintings depicting ragas of Indian classical music provide a visual
representation of the moods determined by the vibrations of the notes. Pai’s
work incorporated graphic impressions of mundane theme and encounters from his
life experiences. His artworks were often filled with nature inspired motifs
and human figures which are part of his environment.
Pai had won
several awards some including the Nehru Award, Goa in 1995, from the Government
of India he received the Padma Shri in 1985 and National Award in 1961 and 1963
by the Lalit Kala Akademi.
