N. S. BENDRE
Akara Modern
1910 -1992
Born in
Indore, Narayan Shridhar Bendre’s artistic career began at the State School of
Art, Indore, in 1929. He then received the Government Diploma in Art from
Bombay in 1933. Bendre gained exposure to 20th-century Western art during
his travel to the United States in 1947-1948, and held a solo exhibition at the
Winermere Gallery, New York. His early impressionistic works were classified as
academic in nature and dominated by landscapes and portraits in oils and
gouache. His works focused on the human form and expressionistic brushstrokes
that were keyed into the mood of the painting. He continued with this style
till his years in Baroda, where he embarked on what is perceived as the most
important phase of his career. It was here that Bendre began exploring ways to
combine cubist, expressionist, and abstract genres from Western Modernism into
his work.
