Born in 1940 Bikash Bhattachrjee was an Indian painter from Kolkata in West Bengal.
He is arguably one of India’s finest painters whose mastery of figuration is unparalleled in the 20th century. He is credited with bringing realism back to Indian art at a time when artists in India were leaning more towards distortion of figures and abstraction.
Bhattacharjee loved painting the city and its people and he was also an accomplished portrait painter. His works has the rare combination of technical elan with elements of the surreal and hyper-real.
